Chagrined at the lack of theaters, screenings and discourse on film and filmmaking in Trenton, several local filmmakers and enthusiasts founded the Trenton Film Society in 2004. The Trenton Film Society was intended to bring together filmmakers, film professionals, and area residents of all ages, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds to build a better understanding of filmmaking, to explore the issues and perspectives in a variety of film -- from local to international -- and to build an appreciation of the film arts. The film society's flagship event is the Trenton International Film Festival, where films from all over the globe are screened in Trenton over a weekend in the fall. The film society also hosts discussions, screenings and events throughout the year, including several other film festivals, one for teens and another around the Academy Awards featuring Oscar-nominated films.
