Like the best cultural institutions, the New Jersey State Museum has a national, even international perspective, yet always maintains an awareness of where it is rooted, the state of New Jersey and its capital, Trenton. The museum has a deep and broad permanent collection of American art and artifacts, and has drawn liberally on the rich concentration of artists and craftspeople located in New Jersey from Colonial times up to the present. The State Museum is much more than just fine art, however, being truly as it calls itself "four museums in one," with a huge archaeology and ethnography collection, over 13,000 artifacts in its cultural history collection, and a history of field investigation supporting its natural history collection which goes back to the museum's inception. With a world-class high-definition planetarium, and year-round children's programs, the State Museum is a destination for the whole family, stimulating and entertaining for all.
