“A portion of the area originally dedicated to the State Museum served as a children’s room, as people of the day began to recognize that people grew fastest mentality in their youth. This prompted the creation of children’s museums with hands-on activities. This room is clad in tile manufactured by the Mueller Tile Company of Trenton, and is thought to have been designed by Herman Mueller himself. Only a small portion of the original tiles remain, including small mosaics depicting an eagle, owl, monkey, leopard, elephant, camel, zebra and tiger, as well as stylized floral designs. Missing tiles were recreated by ceramist Katherine Hackl in a style similar to that of Mueller. The theme for the new 1995 tiles is taken from Rudyard Kipling’s Just So stories.” Downtown Trenton Artwalk
