NEW JERSEY HESSIANS - TRUTH AND LORE IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
New Jersey State Library - Level 2 Reading Room, 185 West State Street

During the American Revolution, five thousand of the thirty thousand German troops hired by Great Britain to fight rebellious colonists marched across New Jersey. Though popular legend would cast these individuals called Hessians as cold and vicious mercenaries, many were prisoners of war with little choice. Stories of their exploits still circulate in New Jersey. Join author Pete Lubrecht as he navigates the myth of Hessian troops in New Jersey to separate fiction from fact. Seating capacity is 75; photo ID is required to enter the State Library. Please RSVP to Cindy Warrick at cwarrick@njstatelib.org or 609-278-2640 ext. 172. Free. www.njstatelib.org

Trenton Free Public Library, 120 Academy Street

Lecture: Don N. Hagist, an editor for Journal of the American Revolution, will offer a lecture on his most recent book "The Revolution's Last Men: The Soldiers behind the Photographs." As the realization came that only a handful of veterans of the American Revolution still survived, six men were photographed and interviewed in 1864, but with inaccurate results. Making use of sources not available in the 1800's, a new perspective was gained on their actual service, along with new details of their quiet postwar lives. www.trentonlib.org Free. www.trentonlib.org
